Great Barrier Island events rarely arrive with six months of polished publicity. They appear on club websites, community calendars and Facebook posts, often after somebody has already put the kettle on. This rolling guide brings the useful listings together in one place and links you back to the source for current details.

Please check before you go. 175° East is only aggregating event information published by third parties. We are not the organiser, ticket seller or operator of these events. Dates, times, prices and programmes can change or be cancelled without notice, so confirm everything through the linked source before booking travel or setting off.

Last checked: 10 September 2026. The broadest current island listing is the Barrier Times Aotea What’s On calendar. The official Aotea Great Barrier Island events calendar is also worth checking, although it does not always carry every local event.

Great Barrier Island Events Worth Planning Around

Wharf to Wharf Marathon & Fun Run

Saturday 3 October 2026 · across Aotea

Wharf to Wharf returns for its 20th anniversary, running from Port FitzRoy to Tryphena across roughly 42 kilometres of gravel road, forestry track and honest Barrier hills. Marathon, half-marathon and shorter options make it more than an event for hardened runners, and it remains Kaitoke School’s major annual fundraiser.

Entries, route information and any late changes are on the official Wharf to Wharf website.

Labour Weekend Market

Saturday 24 October 2026 · 10am–12pm · Claris Club

A Labour Weekend community market at the Claris Club, with stall bookings handled directly by the club. Check the Claris Club events page for updates before heading over.

Halloween Kids Disco

Saturday 31 October 2026 · from 5pm · Claris Club

A family-friendly Halloween disco with prizes for the best dressed. The club currently lists entry at $2. Confirm the time and details on the Claris Club events page.

Icehouse Ventures Market

Sunday 22 November 2026 · Claris Club

The market is listed for the final day of the Icehouse Ventures gathering at the Claris Conference Centre. Details are still to come, so treat this as a date for the diary and check the Claris Club listing closer to the weekend.

Spectacular by Nature Garden Tour Weekend

Friday 27 November–Wednesday 9 December 2026 · locations across Aotea

The main Garden Tour takes place on Saturday 28 November, visiting private gardens around the island by organised transport. Four routes offer different levels of walking and access, and proceeds support the Great Barrier Island Community Health Trust.

The wider weekend currently includes a Friday night welcome dinner at The Currach, the Garden Tour on Saturday, the Stonewall Village Rose Show in Tryphena on Sunday 29 November, and the Spectacular by Nature art exhibition at Aotea Arts & History Village from 27 November to 9 December.

Read the programme, accessibility notes, prices, transport advice and cancellation terms on the official Garden Tour website. Book there rather than relying on this summary.

Santa Parade and Christmas Market

Saturday 5 December 2026 · Claris Club

The Claris Club has confirmed the date, with the programme still to come. Watch the club’s events page for times and parade details.

New Year’s Eve Disco

Thursday 31 December 2026 · Claris Club

New Year’s Eve on Aotea has a habit of filling accommodation and transport well before anyone has decided what to wear. The Claris Club has announced a disco, with further details pending. Check the source listing before making plans.

New Year Picnic

Saturday 2 January 2027 · Claris Club

The island’s New Year Picnic returns on 2 January. The club has not yet published the full programme, so use the Claris Club events page for updates.

Afterglow Festival

Saturday 9 January 2027 · Claris Club

Afterglow returns to the Claris Club for a summer day of New Zealand music on Aotea. Line-up, admission conditions and ticket availability belong to the organiser; follow the official ticket link published by Claris Club.

Markets, Movies and Regular Events on Aotea

These smaller events are often the best way to meet the island rather than merely look at it. They also change more readily than the major annual events, so the source link matters more than our summary.

Aotea Growers and Makers Market

Saturday 3 October and Saturday 7 November 2026 · 10am · Claris Conference Centre

Local produce, preserves, plants, baking and work from island makers. Barrier Times currently lists both dates. Confirm the next market through the Barrier Times calendar or Grow Food Aotea events.

Island Screens Movie Nights

Mondays · 7.15pm · Barrier Social Club, Tryphena

Food and drinks are generally available from 6pm, followed by the film at 7.15pm. Barrier Times currently lists weekly screenings through November, with door prices of $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Film titles and schedules can change, so check Island Screens on Facebook before going.

Aotea Run Club

Saturdays · 9am · Pā Beach bus shelter, Tryphena

An inclusive 30-minute out-and-back run or walk, with all paces welcome. The current series is listed weekly into November on the Barrier Times calendar.

Iyengar Yoga

Mondays 5.30pm · Claris Conference Centre
Wednesdays 9.30am · Tryphena Hall
Saturdays 9.30am · men’s class, Claris Conference Centre

Barrier Times currently carries these weekly classes into early December. Contact details and any schedule changes are on the current community calendar.

September Line Dancing

Saturdays in September · 5–6pm · Claris Conference Centre

The Claris Club lists line dancing for a gold-coin donation. Check the club’s current events page in case individual sessions change.

Where to Check What’s On This Week

For last-minute gigs, changed hours and events announced after this page was checked, go straight to the local publishers and venues:

Facebook and Instagram are irritatingly good at being where the newest information appears and remarkably bad at letting everyone see it. If a social link will not open without an account, use the venue’s contact details or check Barrier Times.

Stay Near Medlands Beach While It’s All Happening

Event weekends put pressure on the island’s limited flights, ferries, rental cars and beds. If one of the larger dates is the reason for your trip, secure those four things early rather than discovering that optimism is not a transport plan.

175° East has three off-grid holiday houses at Medlands Beach, with space for couples, families and groups travelling together. All three have full kitchens, hot showers, Starlink WiFi and proper decks for doing absolutely nothing after a crowded calendar day. Medlands Beach is an eight-minute walk away, while Aotea Brewing and Aotea Roast are about five minutes from the houses.

Choose Pītokuku House for a larger group, Ruru House for privacy and elevated valley views, or the Tree House for its red clawfoot bath in the bush canopy. You can also check availability across all three houses or read the complete guide to things to do on Great Barrier Island while planning the rest of the trip.

And one final time for the sensible people at the back: confirm the event with its organiser before booking travel. Island weather, volunteer-run programmes and ferry timetables occasionally have opinions of their own.
